Mustard Festival - An Event to Savour
by Paul Bentley, 2007-09-05

An Event to Savour

Sponsored by International Village BIA, Hamilton's 10th Annual Mustard Festival is about much more than just a recognition that our own G.S. Dunn supplies 90% of the milled mustard in the world - it's a celebration of the downtown area, and it's a deliciously good time! True to form, the Mustard Festival offers culinary delights for varied tastes - with mustard as a prominent flavour. But satisfying the palate is just part of the enjoyment.

Located downtown at Ferguson Station (at King and Ferguson), the atmosphere at this outdoor festival was amazing. The whole block was bubbling with activity as almost 15,000 people came for the excitement - all with free admission.

Jazz and Blues aficionados enjoyed 3 days of exceptionally talented local musicians. From Bill Holinaty's Jazz Band, to Toronto All Star BIG Band and the Jumpin Jive Jazz Band, this party was 'moving' all night!

"MusTOT Village" was a big hit, entertaining families with clowns, balloons, carnival games, horse wagon rides, face painting, candyfloss, popcorn, apple cider and a wonderful petting zoo. There was also Charlie Little Fingers Interactive Concert and Applefun Puppetry.

Now that the Hamilton Tiger-Cats Organization has moved into the neighbourhood, they joined in the festivities and were a tremendous help to the success of the event. Also a welcome addition this year was Hamilton Artists Inc., offering an opportunity for many fine artists to display their work.

Principal organizer Mary "Mustard" Pocius, from Hamilton's International Village BIA, does amazing things with her $40,000 budget. Harnessing 25 volunteers and the support of the City of Hamilton, Mary and her crew run a successful festival every year - with special thanks also to G.S. Dunn, Maille, CH TV, the Ti-Cats and K-Lite FM 102.9, as well as the many fine vendors who support the event every year.
